Ryerson’s stock of aluminum square tubing ranges in thickness from 0.062” through 0.5” and in widths from 0.75” through 8”. These products can be extruded or welded.
The alloys used in aluminum square tube exhibit high levels of corrosion resistance and weldability, as well as great strength.
The most used grades of aluminum square tube are 6061 and 6063. These are considered heat treatable alloys: The initial strength of these alloys is enhanced by the addition of elements such as copper, magnesium, zinc, and silicon. As aluminum is exposed to higher temperatures, these elements will contribute to increased strengthening.
Tempering is a condition produced in sheet steel by mechanical, chemical, or thermal treatment. A given steel may be in fully softened or annealed temper, or it may be cold worked to the hard temper, or further to spring temper.
Temper | Impact |
F (as fabricated) | As rolled, no annealing, mechanical properties consistent. |
---|---|
O (annealed) | The process of heating and cooling to induce softening. |
H (strain hardened) | An increase in hardness and strength caused by plastic deformation at temps lower than the recrystallizing range/cold worked. |
T (thermally treated) | Heat treated |
W (solution heat treated) | Heating metal to high temp & maintaining it long enough for one or more constituents to enter the solid solution. Solution is then cooled rapidly to retain the constituents within. |
